Poetry Sunday (01-10-10 edition)

This is one of my favorites by Petronius. There have been many translations of it. This particular translation is by Ben Jonson.

Doing, a filthy pleasure is, and short

by Gaius Petronius

Doing, a filthy pleasure is, and short;
And done, we straight repent us of the sport:
Let us not then rush blindly on unto it,
Like lustful beasts, that only know to do it:
For lust will languish, and that heat decay.
But thus, thus, keeping endless holiday,
Let us together closely lie and kiss,
There is no labour, nor no shame in this;
This hath pleased, doth please, and long will please; never
Can this decay, but is beginning ever.

Shipping Delays

I believe that I may have a couple of books waiting to be shipped out. Unfortunately I don't even know right now what may need to ship, as everything from my bedroom is packed in boxes in my spare room.

Late November-Early December was consumed with holiday preparation. Mid-Late December we packed up my bedroom and began painting, and we just finished that a few days ago and are slowly going through the boxes and moving things back into the bedroom along with the furniture.

So at the moment, all of my TBR books and those that were for giveaways are packed up while I slowly work through things.

So long story short (TOO LATE!), if you are waiting on a book from me, please be patient. Since I am shipping these books, it sometimes takes longer to get them out than if they were shipped by a publisher. Just know that I haven't forgotten and am just spinning my wheels and trying to get caught up. But, if you are waiting on a book from me, please feel free to check in with me and make sure that it has not gone out yet.

Thanks for hanging in there with me!

Friday Spotlight

I'd like to thank justpeachy36 over at Debbie's Book Bag for shining her Friday Spotlight on my blog! I certainly appreciate the recognition. I would have mentioned it sooner, but I've been tied up since just after Christmas with my first painting project. We just spent a week painting my bedroom walls, ceiling, trim and doors-- including an accent wall. What a project! Boy, am I glad that's over, and that I can sleep in my bed again!

Thanks again, justpeachy (Debbie?)! I'm glad that you enjoy the blog, and I'm just having fun getting back into reading again...

What's Releasing (01-06-10 edition)

Here's "what's releasing" the week of January 11th:

Synopsis

Psychiatrist Andrew Marlowe, devoted to his profession and the painting hobby he loves, has a solitary but ordered life. When renowned painter Robert Oliver attacks a canvas in the National Gallery of Art and becomes his patient, Marlow finds that order destroyed. Desperate to understand the secret that torments the genius, he embarks on a journey that leads him into the lives of the women closest to Oliver and a tragedy at the heart of French Impressionism.

Kostova's masterful new novel travels from American cities to the coast of Normandy, from the late 19th century to the late 20th, from young love to last love. THE SWAN THIEVES is a story of obsession, history's losses, and the power of art to preserve human hope.

Synopsis

Dekker and Healy follow their collaboration in Kiss with another odyssey into the paranormal that transports readers into another dimension and returns them head spinning, never to see their own world in quite the same way. Two young friends are propelled out of their Gypsy clan when shady characters burn their kumpania (community). The girls lose family and friends in the fire and grow up separated from each other and the boy they both loved. One is faced with an impossible choice that haunts her until the girls meet 15 years later, where a reality-bender twist is revealed. Readers who enjoy allegorical stories that are rooted in the Bible will find dozens of connections, some force-fed (“He was the Jesus to Janeal’s Judas”) and others unorthodox but mind-zinging (“ 'Who can imagine what God and Satan discuss? Certainly Job had no idea God was gambling with his life.’ ”) Christian fiction lovers who enjoy romantic interest, frantic chases by sinister figures of biblical proportions, suspense, and the old-fashioned joy of suspending disbelief will find this new dynamic writing duo, once a writer-editor combo, fiery hot.

Mailbox Monday (01-04-09 edition)

Mailbox Monday is brought to us by The Printed Page. I had said that I was taking a break from this in December, as I was simply putting all packages received under my tree. So In my mailbox last month I got:

Run for Your Life by James Patterson
Won from
He Followed Me Home...Can I Keep Him?

A calculating killer who calls himself The Teacher is taking on New York City, killing the powerful, the arrogant, the don't-give-a-darnst-about-anyone rich. For some New Yorkers it seems that the rich were getting what they deserve at last. For New York's social elite, it is a call to chaos and terror. The Teacher's message to the wealthy is clear: remember your manners or suffer the consequences! Detective Mike Bennett is assigned the case. Managing the pressure from his Commissioner, the Mayor, and the New York media would be enough for anyone, but Mike also has to care for his 10 children-who are all under 12 and who all have the flu! Detective Bennett discovers a secret pattern in the Teacher's lessons-and realizes he has just hours to save New York from the greatest disaster in its history. From the #1 bestselling author who introduced readers to Alex Cross and the Women's Murder Club-comes the continuation of his newest, electrifying series. Run for Your Life is his most heart-stopping thriller yet.

Sex, Drugs and Gefilte Fish: The Heeb Storytelling Collection by Shana Liebman
Won from
Simply Stacie

Scoring weed for your uncle...Hanging out with porn stars on Christmas Eve...Eating nachos with the Mossad...Observing the Dyke Days of Awe...Getting held up at a Weight Watcher's meeting...Spying on your naked Hebrew School teacher. From Heeb magazine--the definitive voice of a proud, searching, and irreverent new generation of American Jews--this first-of-a-kind fast and fun showcase spotlights the hilarious and heartful raconteurial gifts of many of today's leading writers, comedians, actors, artists, and musicians. Laura Silverman, Michael Showalter, Andy Borowitz, Joel Stein, Ben Greenman, Darrin Strauss, and others navigate sex, drugs, work, youth, family, and, on the lighter side, body and soul. You'll never bleach your arm hair again.

The Werewolf's Guide to Life: A Manual for the Newly Bitten by Ritch Duncan and Bob Powers
Won from Bookin' With Bingo

Have you been attacked by a wolf-like creature in the last 30 days? Was it after the sun had set and under a full moon? If you answered, “yes” to both these questions, there’s a very good chance that you were bitten by a werewolf. You now have less than a month before the full moon returns and with it your first transformation into a savage, bloodthirsty beast.
Survival is an option, but first, know this:
* Werewolves are real.
* The majority of lycanthropes who do not have access to this book die during or shortly after their first transformations, generally due to heart failure, gunshot wounds, exposure, drowning or suicide.
* Hollywood horror movies are NOT to be used as guides to living as a werewolf. Their goal is not to educate, but to entertain. As a result, they are largely ignorant of the realities of the condition.
* Ignorance creates monsters; lycanthropy does not.
* You are not a monster.
The Werewolf's Guide to Life cuts through the fiction and guides you through your first transformation and beyond, offering indispensable advice on how to tell if you’re really a werewolf, post-attack etiquette, breaking the news to your spouse, avoiding government abduction, and how to not just survive, but thrive. You cannot afford to not read this book. Your very life depends on it.

A Century of Flavor: Nielsen-Massey Vanillas
Won from
A Wrestling Addicted Mommy
The deliciously interesting cookbook combines recipes from the Nielsen family collection as well as recipes from chef friends attracted to Nielsen-Massey's quality vanilla extract. Contains a delightful collection of bakery and pastry recipes and teaches how vanilla can be essential in a savory dish.

Thanks so much to all of the giveaway hosts! Additionally I also got my books from my Secret Santa Somer. Thanks again, Somer!

I also joined lots of challenges, and don't think that I successfully completed a single one, although a came close on a couple. I've joined a ton more challenges for 2010, so we'll see if I do any better on them! I've been excitedly holding off on reading some books, because they were scheduled for challenges that didn't begin until 2010. So now I get to dig into them. Yeah!
